I am Raymond K. Hessel...

Posted by: Tony

"Tomorrow will be the most beautiful day in Raymond K. Hessel's life. His breakfast will taste better than any meal you and I have ever tasted." - Tyler Durdan - Fight Club

This moment in the movie always left me with two feelings; One, Tyler was one sick ass dude... And Two, maybe he was right... To get the full message of the scene you have to view it in context with the movie but here's some excerpts from the screenplay that tells the tail.... Stick with me, I've got a point at the end. :)

Reflections....

Posted by: Tony

Sometimes when you wake up in the morning, you have this feeling; a feeling like today is going to be the best day of your life. I woke up this morning with that feeling and haven't let it go all day. I'm wondering when it will leave me, but I hope it never does.

Driving to work today with Amanda, looking over at her, smiling, laughing, even the quiet moments when nothing is said, really makes me thankful. It makes thankful for her and for the people and things in my life that I love. To list the things that I'm thankful for would be trivial because we all have our own perception of worth, but in an effort to explain how I'm feeling today, here it goes:

iPod Vending Machines??

Posted by: Tony
As if the World wasn't messed up enough....Walking through the mall with my girlfriend a couple weeks back we were discussing global issues like; extreme poverty in Africa, drinking water shortages World-wide, and our annoying inability to just buy an iPod whenever we wanted from a unmanned vending machine... Well, our day has come.

iPod Vending MachineAccording to market research people are 65% more likely to buy something if it is sold from a vending machine. So the fact that the iPod is the Worlds top selling MP3 player AND it's being sold from a vending machine seems a little like unfair business practice... Regardless of these facts, our surprise upong seeing this site was indescribable.

Let me try to break it down for you. Here are some facts about poverty and how it affects people on a global scale:

1. Half the world — nearly three billion people — live on less than two dollars a day.

2.The poorer the country, the more likely it is that debt repayments are being extracted directly from people who neither contracted the loans nor received any of the money.

3.“The lives of 1.7 million children will be needlessly lost this year [2000] because world governments have failed to reduce poverty levels”.

4. A few hundred millionaires now own as much wealth as the world’s poorest 2.5 billion people.

So with all these facts about poverty what are we to do? Product Red: Read more...

Run, don't walk, to see The Departed

Posted by: Tony

I was out last night and saw the new movie The Departed. I was really excited to see it, and since it got the thumbs up from my dad and brother (the masters of movie reviews) I knew I couldn't wait any longer. Let me just say that this movie is Scorcese at his best. Not since Goodfella's have I seen such unique storytelling, smooth dialogue, and edgy portrayals of the mafia lifestyle.

The Departed Movie PosterWith an all star cast and top notch performances by Matt Damon, Leo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, and Mark Wahlberg this movie cannot be missed.  A remake of the Hong Kong drama Internal Affairs, this movie does an amazing job retelling the original story. The pace of the movie is quick (in most parts) and keeps your attention despite it's 2hr. 30min. timeline. To me, the best thing about the movie was how you feel your opinion of the characters shift as the story progressed and learn more about them. And the anticipation of what happens next, well, let's just say that a pitcher of Shiner, 1 1/2 Margarita pizza's and 2 1/2 hours didn't keep me from losing interest and I was on the edge of my seat until the last frame. Defiantly check this one out, and feel free to call me if you need someone to watch it with...

Only in Texas

Posted by: Tony
As part of the Virtual Neighborhood Border Watch Program, the State of Texas has been testing video surveillance cameras in different environments along the 1240 miles of Texas/Mexico border using the internet to transmit the images. The last stage of the test is to stress the system by providing public access to numerous surveillance cameras.

That's where I come in. My name is Tony... my mission; to defend the borders of the great state of Texas against the evil illegal aliens who are attacking my job market... So here's the deal. You sign up on this website and they email you a username and password combo to access the site. Once logged in you can choose from one of eight different cameras. Then, what do you do...? You wait. You watch and wait for something "suspicious" to happen.

My two personal favorite surveillance cameras are camera 2 and camera 4 which basically point to two empty parking lots with cars driving in and out. I'm not sure what kind of cars should look suspicious, VW Bugs perhaps? Maybe a car with 25 people in it? I'm not sure. But for now, I'm just going to report the lady who left her shopping cart in the middle of the parking lot and the guy who took a piss in the bushes... Until next time. Keep Texas safe!

Regina Spektor

Ahhh... The Russian beauty hits the stage this Thursday night at The Gypsy Tea Room in Deep Ellum. I'm excited to see the show and hear tracks from her new album Begin To Hope. It should be a good concert. I first started listening to her because of my girlfriend and I must say (regardless of how many man-points get stripped away) I really like her music. I'll let you know my thoughts after the show. I have been known to be wrong once or twice...
